Where Oh Where, Did I Leave My Bone?

Why does my dog bury his bone?

Why do some dogs bury their bones? Or toys, or treats, or socks or whatever?

I have two dogs and while only one of them has ever done this, the other always looks confused and frustrated as to why the other does this.

In this article, we will discuss a few theories on why some dog might feel the need to bury their “valuables”.

If you occasionally overfeed your dog, it’s simply a way for them to save the leftovers for later (doggy bag, anyone)?

It can be instinctual, like back in the day when your dog’s ancestors kept their food safe from predators by burying it in the ground.

Your dog might feel the need to hide their belongings if you have other animals in the house who they might regard as a threat. They’re just trying to protect their belongings, just like any possessive sibling would be inclined to do.

Or they might be looking for some good old fashion attention, and maybe this seems to be the only way they can get it.

In some cases, it may not just be cute or playful behavior, but rather an underlying health issue or an indicator of stress or anxiety. Some dogs suffering from illnesses bury their food too. This might also happen if you have a new dog in the home, a change in diet, or just a finicky eater.

So, before we get too worried, let’s try out a few things and see if we can break our little buddy of their hiding obsession.

• Take your dog on walks as often as possible, play with them, and spend plenty of time together.

• Limit the number of toys and keep their toys in a bin or toy chest where they can easily get to them.

• Train your dog to bring the toys back to the bin by showing them they are safe there.

• Reward your dog with treats and lots of love when they bring a toy back.
